8th Grade Science    

Middle School Science Syllabus

              2023-2024 School Year                   

The middle school classes will be focusing on select topics from major disciplines of science: Physical, Life, Earth, Space Science and Living environment. The curriculum and assessments have been aligned to the New York State Next Generation Standards.

8th Grade Textbooks:

We will be using the following text modules in class from Science Fusion. 

• Science Fusion Module D Ecology
• Biology
• Biology Workbook
• Decisions for Health (Blue)

Course Supplies:

Students are expected to bring the following supplies to class every day:

•  Science Notebook
•  Science Folder
•  Pencils, pens, highlighter, etc...
•  Kleenex Tissues, paper towels, Hand Sanitizer, Clorox Wipes   

Policies and Guidelines:

• Mature and appropriate behavior is expected at all times. Inappropriate behavior  will not be tolerated. 
• When the teacher is speaking, you are listening 
• When you come in, sit in your assigned seat. NO wandering around. 
• Follow the classroom procedures accordingly. Begin working on assignments when  instructed. Raise your hand if you have questions or need help.
• Please remember St. Martins of Tours  chromebook are monitored at all times. 
• Take turns speaking, Participate, Help others, Clean up after yourself, and use the sign out book for the restroom. 

Attendance Policy:

• When a student is absent, it is the student’s responsibility to make up any missed work. See me for any missing work passed out while you were absent
• It is the student’s responsibility to seek out these resources AND to check with me for any other information that was missed. Please see me at the beginning of your first class back – not after class has already started.

Homework Policy:

• Homework/classwork is posted in our google classroom page. 
• Homework will be checked by the teacher at the beginning of class or turned in to the teacher as directed.

Late Work

• All work is given with an expected due date. All assignments turned in late will be marked as such and points will be taken off. Even with this consequence, it is better to turn in assignments late than to receive a zero. If you have a personal reason why your assignment is late, please see me. 

Extra Help

• Permission slip must be sent in the day before attending extra help. 

Grading Policy:

Several factors make up the grade in Science. 

• In addition to daily classwork, students will have regular homework assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, and laboratory reports to complete.
• Effort and participation are very important. Students are expected to be on time to class and to come prepared. The breakdown of the grade for each trimester is as follows:

• Tests 40 %
• Quizzes 20 %
• Labs/Projects 20 %
• Classwork 10 %
• Homework 10 %

Google Classroom:

• All daily class assignments, homework assignments, upcoming events, helpful documents, and other important information will be posted in the classes google classroom page. Parents are encouraged to visit our google classroom.
